I've done a few roller derby logos over the last few years and here is my latest!
It's for Sturgeon County Junior Roller Derby Association. I think the skater is pretty cute and fierce!
Why the DO NOT COPY all over it? Well it seems as though some new roller derby clubs have tried to use my art in the past. It's quite frustrating as an artist because this is how I make my living and some people think they can use it without paying for it just because they are able to copy it off the internet. Please respect the effort that I took to do it and respect the fact that SCRDA paid me for it. It is mine and it is theirs. I was at Local Public Eatery in South Edmonton Common drawing caricatures for a birthday party. There were about 20 people there celebrating the birthday so it was a bit like musical chairs: as I finished drawing one couple, they would change seats so the next ones could come over. Luckily the table was a huge, thick table that didn't move so all so all I did was lean my board up against it. I could have done more caricatures as there were people in the bar that could see what was going on and were interested in getting one too! But I was there specifically for that birthday party and I had to leave right afterwards. People are always pleased and surprised to come to a friend's birthday party and be able to leave with a caricature!

Here is a side-by-side comparison of a 'studio' caricature and a 'live' caricature. Studio caricatures are digital drawings with colour while the live event caricatures are on on paper with a Sharpie.
When drawing 'live' at an event, a caricaturist has to capture the person in a short amount of time. These events are most often at busy so, keeping their attention and capturing their smile is a challenge. I meet a lot of people and hear some great stories. I just wish I could get a picture of all my drawings but, there is a line of people waiting. I don't forget too many faces because I look at the details. Some people get a little uncomfortable with the intensity that I need to study them. In the end, I always love to see their reaction when I show them what I have drawn - they smile or laugh. Drawing is a great way to meet people and make them happy.
In the studio there's more time to 'get it'! So, I like to get a good picture (I can only draw what I see) a closeup photo with their 'real' smile is best. Often I like to draw a caricature before an event to warm up my hand and get into the grove.
I like both ways and I can tell the two slightly different styles of mine even though I don't know if I can put into words how I can tell. But, if you were to show me an older drawing of mine, I could probably guess correctly. Of course a coloured caricature definitely takes more time.

I recently drew caricatures at a 1st Birthday Party. The theme was “Little Man” and it was all about bow ties and moustaches.
It seems as though I was the only one who donned a moustache. A simple task since I also do FACE PAINTING. But I had company
with my bow tie. The party was held at Cafe O’Play in Riverbend. I’d never been there before and I’m sure if it had been in business
back when my kids were little, I would have been there often! I drew kids and parents while the kids played and the parents visited.
Caricatures are a great gift to give out. Parents were pleasantly surprised at being able to bring a caricature home with them.

Drawing caricatures for Party Central at a wedding was a pleasure . The couple had travelled to from B.C. to have their wedding in the Redwater Alberta (Northeast of Edmonton) so, one of their grandmas could be there. That tells you what kind of people they are and the feel of the wedding. Here are a couple of my favourite drawings from the evening. I'm glad that I could include the drawing of the bride and groom in my favourites!

I was invited to a Caring Clowns meeting. I was asked to draw clowns for them to use for colouring pages.
Here is one of the lovely clowns I got to draw. Colouring pages are a great advertising addition for not just clowns!

Last night I had fun drawing at the Alberta Services for StudentsConference hosted by NAIT. Here are two of my favourite drawings and a couple awesome women! It was such a pleasant evening. And for me, the organisers had brought extra chairs for people waiting in line. So at any time, if I looked over, there would be 6 other people waiting. But they all were relaxed, chatting with the person beside them, enjoying their time. I'm definitely going to suggest a line of chairs supplied if at all possible in the future at other events!

Hi Cosmin Danila; Thank you for linking to my blog from yours! Your photos are so beautiful. You sure captured a lot of great moments at their weddings - they must be very happy.
I went hog wild recently and picked up a couple different markers [Faber-Castell PITT artist pens ]to try out for caricatures. I've drawn caricatures with Sharpies for what seems like forever but when I'm drawing on my tablet and not paper, I noticed that I'm the most comfortable with the pencil or paint brush tool. So I thought I'd try paint brush tipped markers. Here's a little doodle with the thinner, more delicate one. I think it will work well at caricature events where the client wants caricatures drawn on smaller sizes of paper than I normally draw on. It's good to step out of your comfort zone to see if you can do something a little different. That's easier said than done when you always have ongoing work and are in constant need of getting it done. Time to practice, time to try new things, when do you squeeze that in?

I drew the owner and pharmacist. The gentleman with the great, curly beard in my photos. He got a big smile on his face when he looked at his caricature and joked that he was going to replace the regular photo of himself back in the pharmacy with his caricature.
One lady I drew, recognised me and my name as I had drawn caricatures for her a couple Christmas' ago for some of her staff. Another man that was in who had come by to see how the event was going, was introduced to me and recognised me for having drawn he and his wife's caricature at a Show Home Open House a month or so ago ( Homes by AVI Caricature Event ). It's a small world sometimes!
I chatted with and drew women and some teenagers who had enjoyed a make over so I got to draw some fabulous looking eyes and lips! I hope they enjoyed their makeovers and caricatures.
I drew caricatures yesterday for Stantec Architecture in downtown Edmonton. They were doing an MS Fundraiser. A very windy day kept me inside and cozy in the lobby. I met a lot of nice people and was happy to be a part of this very worthy cause.
I need to apologise to this lovely lady with the curly blonde hair. She asked me to check the photo because she said she often ends up taking photos with her eyes closed. I swear it looked like her eyes were open! I swear! Either way, she’s still a beauty.

I drew a few groups of three. They were colleagues that were obviously friends as well. So great to see, people who enjoy their time at work so much! And I definitely enjoyed my time at Stantec.

Some days or weeks I may not post as much as I usually do. Why you ask? Well life does come with certain responsibilities, yes?! There's one big one that I don't really look forward to. That's right ... taxes! Do you agree? What a silly question huh! Now if I was good at all that stuff, I'd be an accountant, not an artist. Luckily, my Mom has always been good at that sort of thing and has been kind enough for years to help me. I cringe to think back on the years when my kids were small ... I'd hand her a big garbage bag full of stuff and she'd sort through it all and have it ready for an accountant to plug in all the numbers. Slowly, very slowly, I've become a little more on the ball. I've even gotten an interest in seeing what I can do throughout the year to make the whole process go fast and smoothly for next year. I'm so darned proud of myself!
I had a great time creating this logo for Glen the Balloon Guy! I had done one initial sketch working from Glen’s vision. Then I did a few tweaks on it after Glen had a look and gave me feedback. We played with colours a bit and now he has this new image to use on his website, business cards, signs, etc....
Did I mention that Glen is a really great guy? He is, and you'll find that out when you hire him for your next corporate and community events, parties, weddings, or to make a unique large sculpture.
I created this logo using Sketchbook Pro on my WacomCintiq Tablet. Digital drawings are new to me so, I am enjoying creating and editing just a little bit more...
He looks like a happy recipient! So nice that they sent me a photo of him with his new, coloured caricature. The light was reflecting on it on the right side but you still get the gist of it. I’m really quite proud of it. So pleased with my coloured caricatures now using my tablet. I used to cringe when people would request a coloured caricature because I didn’t really like the look of it with markers. Sometimes I’d be almost done the caricature and I’d see that there was a marker smudge on it so I’d have to start again. Now, that frustration is no more, I love the final product!
Caricatures at Edmonton's Misericordia Hospital Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast. Many great volunteers. Some with 50 years of helping at hospitals. There were mothers and daughters that came out together to help. There were volunteers that knit hats for preemies and others that worked in the hospital's gift shop. One guy had recently moved here from Colombia and was volunteering - talk about giving back! It was a fun time and hearing so many stories while I drew was extra special. They truly were an appetitive group to celebrate with - lots of smiles too! It is fun to be an Edmonton Artist and meet so many interesting people.

I did the interview with Dan Tencer & Andrew Grose last week and then went in today and drew sportscaster Brian Hall. I happened to bring my daughter along with me and I introduced them and Brian chatted so positively with her about university (UAlberta) and becoming a teacher. He put her at ease so quickly. He's just that kind of man: so warm hearted and friendly. I like to talk with the person I'm drawing to make them feel more comfortable but there was no need to do that with Brian. He sat
back and talked with us and batta-bing, batta-boom, the drawing was done!
My daughter, Quinlyn, was intrigued by his office. Brian Hall has been in broadcasting for many years so he had lots of cool memorabilia on the walls and on some shelves. Quinlyn being an Eskimo season ticket holder and Brian Hall being the voice of The Eskimos for years, she thought it was pretty cool meeting him!
