Company Picnic Caricature Gifts: Edmonton Artist Laurel

It was my second year back at A & B Rail’s company picnic! It was a warm afternoon at Laurier Park and staff and families played a friendly game of baseball. I drew caricatures and even did some repeats from last year. Drew someone’s daughter who’d since had her braces taken off so of course there was a need for a new caricature! One young guy showed me the drawing I’d done of him last year from his phone, “Yup, you’ve changed since last year! You definitely look older!” Here are a few of my favourites from the day. I always appreciate people letting me take their photo with their caricature.

Family Caricatures in Colour! Edmonton Artist Laurel

Still loving my Cintiq Companion artist’s tablet for doing coloured art work! Giving a clean, professional coloured caricature now makes it feel like years ago since I was doing them with markers. Thank goodness those days are gone. No more marker lines, accidental smudges that make me have to start from scratch. Now the shading quality is lovely and I’m proud to give this kind of final art piece. This way the final digital copy is also an option for the recipient. Staff Appreciation Party Caricatures by Edmonton Artist Laurel

It’s so much fun drawing curls and this lady has the most fabulous hair! Showing curls without getting to caught up in the details of all of it is tricky sometimes. I was really pleased with this one. This was drawn at a Staff Appreciation Party. Goodies, good hearted conversation and everyone enjoying seeing each other's caricatures!

A Happy Caricature Recipient

Always pleased to receive a photo of the recipient of my caricatures! 

 This caricature was recognizing her for her 30 years of part time work with The City of Edmonton at Hardisty Pool. I often go to meetings around the city and see my caricatures up in people’s offices. Some that I did many years ago and some more recent. Of course it makes me smile … 

I wonder if people notice me glancing at it and see the slight smile?

Christmas Card for the Northern and Southern Jubilee Auditorium staff

I was asked to do a group caricature Christmas Card for the Northern (Edmonton) and Southern (Calgary) Jubilee Auditorium staff. As you can see, I was lucky enough to work on some great faces! I was really pleased at the process using my tablet. I so love using my Cintiq Companion and being able to draw directly on the screen. It really is such cool technology. All the advantages of hand drawn art while throwing in advantages of a computer.

A Happy Caricature Recipient at Finning Edmonton

What a great smile! I sure had fun drawing this caricature. I’m always so pleased when I am able to see the person who received the caricature. It’s fun for me to see them side by side. This was a going away gift from some of the people in his department at FINNING. I hope this always brings a smile to his face when he looks at it and think of his coworkers fondly.

 Looks like his hair is longer than in the photo I’d worked from. I would have had a great time making his hair taller in the caricature!

It was fun for everyone at a 2 Year Old Birthday Party! I drew Caricatures for the guests at a lovely little girl’s birthday party. Here is one that made me smile! Oh my gosh, it looks like I forgot to draw the the scruff on his chin. If this is a picture of you, can you please get a sharpie and add it in?! It’s going to drive me crazy that I didn’t do that. What was I thinking?

Last stop in at Microsoft for Caricatures

I had my last event in at Microsoft for the Christmas season and met a lot of great people. It was the night of gifts from several people of treats from Cookies by George. My son loved it because I brought them home for him since I’ve been too busy to exercise lately that I thought my son could burn off a cookie or two more than I could. It was so sweet of people to drop of a treat for me after I’d drawn their caricature.

 I drew a guy who’s mom I’d drawn at her company’s Christmas party a couple weeks ago! It’s a small world!

 Another lady had seen me drawing caricatures at The Edmonton Valley Zoo but the line up was too long so she was thrilled to be able to get one from me at the Microsoft Store.

 Take a look at this lovely little girl I drew with the colourful headband breads. What a dollie huh!

Wedding Reception Caricatures

As the bride said to me on Saturday night while I drew her caricature, “We thought caricatures were such a great idea because people are giving us things but we wanted to give them something back!” 


Capturing special moments is something alright and as you can see, people of all ages enjoy getting their caricature done. Caricatures at weddings a great addition because not everyone likes to dance or dance the whole time. 


Such interesting people stories I get to find out as I chat with the people sitting in front of me. “I’m the mother of the bride...”, “You know, she just recently found her birth parent recently and she is here meeting the rest of the family for the first time...” People are truly interesting. I should figure out some sort of scientific study to go along with my caricature events. I should approach the government for a grant for this study! Hmmmmmm .... !

A Keepsake in a Painting

What a perfect way to have a lasting memory of a loved one. My client’s Grandmother loved iris’. This flower painting will be something that will warm their home and warm her heart for years to come.
I thoroughly enjoyed using a palette knife for a lot of it.

I never tire of doing caricatures and I had a wonderful group of people I got to meet and draw at Millcreek Pool’s opening party.
