I drew caricatures at Villa Caritas for Nurse’s Week. I met some great people that did various jobs at Villa Caritas for the residents. It was really nice to chat with them while I drew them. Here are a few of my favourite caricatures from the day.

Checking out Gerry Rasmussen's Art Show

I took some time today to check out my friend and colleague’s art show. Check out Gerry Rasmussen’s art show “Take Me To Your Leader” at Great Bear Frames ( 12247 Fort Road, Edmonton ). My daughter came along with me and enjoyed it too. Go see the likes of John Candy, Neil Young, Wayne Gretzky, Prime Minister Stephen Harper, newly minted Premier Rachel Notley, Daryl Katz, and even Gerry’s cat! You need to see them up close, they’re fantastic!

Day 2 at The Cheremosh Ukraininan Dance Festival

I have a lot of photos to show from the Cheremosh Ukrainian Dance Festival but I was there for 10 hours so it makes sense that I’d have this many photos to show you! I loved drawing at this festival because as you can see, the dancers were so good at smiling - they made it easy for me. I got to draw lots of braids and lovely Ukrainian attire. So here are only SOME of my favourites from the day … I had such a wonderful time but boy, was I tired at the end. You don’t realise how tired you are until you stop!

When I look at these they bring a smile to my face. Hope they do the same for you. I feel so lucky being able to do this for a living.

My first afternoon drawing at the Cheremosh Ukrainian Dance Festival, at The Arden Theatre in St. Albert, was a pleasure to be at. There’s nothing like drawing dancers … they sure know how to smile and it’s easy for them to hold that smile. Sure makes it easy for a caricaturist! Here are some of my favourites from the day.

I’m sure I will have several more to show you after back drawing there again tomorrow. Looking forward to it!

In Trouble With CRA?

City of Edmonton Pool Safety Sign

I’ve been doing a series of posters for all City of Edmonton swimming pools. This one addresses the issue of people holding their breaths for a longer period of time than is safe. It’s something than many people have done but did you know that lifeguards have to attend to people who get into real danger because of it?

The City of Edmonton is a leader in safety prevention and getting important messages like this one out to their clientele. Taking action instead of reacting. Bravo!

Abstract Landscape Painting

I recently took a Vern Busby Abstract Landscape Painting Workshop. It was through SWCA ( Society of Western Canadian Artists ) which I am a member of. I took the workshop because I wanted to try different painting styles and basically … learn stuff! My daughter took the workshop with me so it was a great Mother/Daughter day as well.

As you can see from the photos, we started by finding a landscape photo - mine was a photo I took on the uncle’s farm in Southern Saskatchewan. Then we broke the painting down into 3 tones and used collage pieces to glue it down with a mixture of gesso and water. After that we chose a warm and a cool tone of: a light tone, a mid tone and a dark tone. I chose light blue and light yellow. Medium warm green and cool green. Dark green and dark purple. I later added a light yellow that went along with and in the same area as the light yellow. We painted these colours on small pieces of yupo and then once they were dry we pasted them on the board like the white, grey and black collage we’d done. Last step was looking at our coloured collage and painting it.

Caricatures at University of Alberta Business Graduation

I had a blast drawing caricatures at the UofA’s Business student’s graduation held at The Delta Edmonton Centre Suite Hotel ! Met a lot of up and coming business men and women who were great to talk to while I drew them. The atmosphere was great … I wonder if it had anything to do with being set up in the entrance way along with the bar? Hmmm?! Take a look at all these great faces…

I hope these caricatures are a keepsake of their evening and this special time in their lives.

Caricatures for Staff Appreciation Day

It was great being part of Staff Appreciation Day for the Greater Edmonton Foundation and Seniors Housing. It was nice hearing how much they really enjoy their job and were enjoying the recognition for their work.

Greater Edmonton Foundation Seniors Housing is the largest not-for-profit registered charity providing subsidized senior’s housing in Alberta. Their mission is to provide friendly, affordable, secure housing and services for seniors in the Edmonton community.

I hope you enjoy looking through the various caricatures I’ve done. Caricatures are drawn in just a few minutes but hopefully it brings back pleasant memories of the day they received it for years to come.

Window Painting for Shoppers Drug Mart

I was in at the Shoppers Drug Mart (7469 101st Ave, Edmonton, AB T6A 3Z5) painting their windows to help advertise their promotion: Your Chance to Win $5,000. if you reduce your tobacco use this year. Their pharmacy is there for your support in kicking the habit. And wouldn’t that be great to win that! These photos were taken from inside the store in the evening.

Caricatures as a "Thank You"

I did these four caricatures for people who were instrumental in the success of the opening of the new City of Edmonton recreation facilities: Clareview Community Recreation Centre and The Meadows Community Recreation Centre.

I did something a little different with these. The facility itself is massive so instead of drawing out this grandiose building, I used a photograph placed in behind the caricature. I really like the effect!

Studio Caricatures of HDK Consulting Team

Some of my studio work: A group caricature of HDK Consulting team ~ A caricature going up on one of their office walls. Individual carixatures were also supplied. It was a really enjoyable project. They had lots of great character and I enjoyed doing the layout for the group caricature in a row instead of layering them in rows. This way, everyone stands out!

HDK Consulting Incorporated is a Mechanical and Electrical Engineering design firm. They specialize in Mechanical, Electrical, Communications and Security Systems Engineering for commercial buildings.

Caricatures for Westcorp

I was asked to draw caricatures for an afternoon event at one of Westcorp’s buildings near the University of Alberta. The Events Coordinator is always thinking up interesting events to bring the residents together. On this day she had me there drawing caricatures and had an awesome spread of delicious food in their party room. It sure seems like a great place to live! Here are a couple of my favourite caricatures from the day. These ones really make me smile.

Some More Face Painting at the Edmonton RV Expo

I Met some cute kids and sent them off with some fun face painting at the RV Show!

Just so you know,  I didn’t know the Pittsburgh Penguins logo by heart, their mom googled it and showed it to me. The little boy was happy I could do it for him.

For the girl with the swirls on her face, she said to just surprise her. I wanted to compliment her black glasses so I think the black swirls went really nice with her glasses.
