Still loving my Cintiq Companion artist’s tablet for doing coloured art work! Giving a clean, professional coloured caricature now makes it feel like years ago since I was doing them with markers. Thank goodness those days are gone. No more marker lines, accidental smudges that make me have to start from scratch. Now the shading quality is lovely and I’m proud to give this kind of final art piece. This way the final digital copy is also an option for the recipient. Face Painting

Face Painting is a pretty cool form of art! You do it and it gets washed off before bed or on some child’s pillow at night! There are some that I do that I’m so pleased with, like this Ninja Turtle, snake and this little blue birdie!

I so LOVE summer, where there are arms and legs to paint on too.

Face Painting at the Secord Show Homes Event

It was a sunny but windy day at the Edmonton event for Secord Show Homes yesterday! 

The wind or crowds did not stop families from coming by to look through the beautiful homes and get some cool free swag: chocolate covered cheesecake on a stick, sliders, balloon animals, bubble fun AND my daughter and I doing face painting!

Look What a Nice Family Sent Me!

After doing caricatures at The Pop Culture Fair, I’d mentioned in my blog that one of the few pictures I took that day had come out blurry. A couple days later I received a nice surprise in my email box...  these two adorable kid’s dad had emailed me pictures of the exact kids and their caricature that I’d been talking about! Now I have a super crisp clear photo to look at for years to come! Little things in life mean a lot sometimes. Check this photo out and see why I was bummed out that the photo I’d taken didn’t turn out….

Caricature Event at Edmonton's Mill Woods Rec Centre

It was a cold day in Edmonton so, It was nice to spend it inside a Rec Centre.  There a was a good size crowd swimming and many going into the Skating rink and the Fitness Centre too.  I was able to meet a few friends going in that I had not seen for quite some time.  Seeing families out enjoying their Sunday was a good way to spend the afternoon.

The City of Edmonton's Mill Woods Rec Centre was hopping yesterday... here is one of the Caricatures that I drew.

Most of us have been at those parties for friends or family who's children are having a birthday. 

I was doing face painting AND caricatures at a birthday party today and parents that brought their kids were pleasantly surprised when they themselves were treated to face painting and a caricature!

Mill Woods Bicycle Festival design

I think this turned out pretty sweet, even if I do say so myself. Fun and lighthearted.

I hope it works well for The City of Edmonton's Community Services and their Mill Woods Bicycle Festival.

Caricatures at a birthday party

I Spent the evening drawing caricatures at a birthday party. I Enjoyed drawing several generations of friends and family. Here's one of my favourites! … brothers that I really enjoyed watching how they interacted with each other. I could tell that they thought each their brother was pretty great. Dare I say that it was pretty darned sweet! They'd probably groan if they heard that!

Face Painting at Community League Winter Fun Day

Today was my 3rd or 4th annual face painting job at Belvedere Community League’s Winter Family Fun Day.

 They do such a great event with face painting (of course), a spaghetti lunch and lots of outdoor activities. It as a nice warm winter day in Edmonton for it. I’ve been impressed with a good showing of people at their annual event no matter what the weather. Neat to recognise some of the kids and to see them growing up just a bit more each time I come back!

Edmonton Hotel and Convention Centre had their Staff and Family Christmas Party last night and they invited me to come draw caricatures for the evening! This is a daughter of one of the staff. Such a pretty smile!

I was taken aback (in a good way) when one lady commented to me, "You're so kind. I've noticed that you compliment people a lot." I had just told her that she had such lovely, high cheek bones. And I found it neat that someone had noticed … because I have to be honest and say that I know that I do tend to vocalise the positives in people when they are sitting in front of me getting their caricature done. I mean, people already feel vulnerable having me stare at them, staring at every piece of their face. So if I think that they have pretty eyes or a neat hair cut, I tell them! Most of us are too critical of ourselves to start with, it can't hurt to hear a compliment!

So, I guess that's my point today, go out there and say something nice to someone! They'll feel good and you'll feel good too.

On the topic of going out and saying something nice to someone:

The other day, as I was heading out of our neighbourhood, I stopped to tell a man that I loved the snowman they had in their front yard. I said that it made me smile every time I passed it. He gave me the biggest smile when I told him that. They could have built the snowman so that it faced their front window but instead they faced it out towards the street. Like a little gift to passers by.

Caricatures at a Birthday Party

Oh what fun I had drawing this young guy! Loved his hair! The trick with drawing curly hair is to NOT draw every curl but just every odd one and keep the edge the definition. Too bad he wasn't smiling with his mouth open so you could really see the similarity in his smile.

If you notice that there is no drawn out frame in this one like I usually do. The party hostess was scanning in all the drawings so she could make a grouping of all the boys at the party. After she'd scanned them all I added in my usual frame and signature.

What advantage is there to having me at your party drawing caricatures? No need to hunt around for stuff for gift bags … the kids leave with a caricature. Parents love it when they bring them home.

I drew caricatures at a few different house parties, a party for neighbours, a party for family and a party for friends. Here is a fun one! He thought it would be a blast to do it with his awesome hat on. I always like drawing something different and the hat turned out neat I think. That's the one interesting thing about living in Canada in winter time …. hats are a fashion statement. Sometimes the wilder the better!

CARICATURES 

AT THE EDMONTON VALLEY ZOO ON FREE ADMISSION DAY 

 It was quite the day full of people and drawing caricatures today at the Valley Zoo!  I heard at the end of the day that there had been 17,000 people who walked through the front gates today.  I drew someone who knew a member of my family in B.C., I drew someone who I’d drawn last year (and she waited in line again this year!) and drew many new faces that I will remember from here on in! Here are a few of my favourite caricatures from the day.  I sure wish I’d had more time to take more photos to keep for my memories. Looking at the pictures brings me back to the fun of the moment.  Hope you enjoy looking through the samples of my caricatures.

Birthday Party Gift Bag Idea!

Are you sick of trying to figure out what to put in gift bags at your child’s birthday party?
