Kinsmen Sports Centre Kid's Den Sign Design

I'm excited to see this sign I designed and just delivered put up at Kinsmen Sports Centre for the City of Edmonton! It will be put up soon, going into their Kid's Den play room. I love their motto, "Where Little Athletes Train". I am proud of the diversity shown in this art. This truly symbolises what Edmonton is all about. And besides, I think all the little kiddies in the art are cute!

Caricatures by Edmonton artist Lauel: Strathearn Art Walk

It was the first time I joined in with other artists at the Strathearn Art Walk. The Strathearn community is really nice with the event held in a big green space overlooking the river valley and Edmonton's downtown skyline. There were a lot of artists and a wide variety of art for people to enjoy viewing the artist's creations. There was a beer garden, kid's crafts, food and music. I saw artists I knew and met a few more. It's hard when you have your own tent set up, to be able to get away to look around. After all, if I wasn't in my tent I couldn't do any caricatures. I also displayed some of my paintings. I haven't had much free time to paint lately which kind of frustrates me ... I'd really love more hours in the day! I look forward to next year's Strathearn Art Walk.
Here are some of the people I drew ....

Caricatures at the Misericordia Hospital's 150 Year Celebration

I had some great people (and their faces!) to draw at the Misericordia Hospital’s (Caritas Health Group)150 Year Celebration. It was really interesting asking each person about their job in the hospital. I get woozy at the sight of blood so, I’m in awe of those who care for all if we need the hospital!

One lady, while waiting in line, was being teased about combing her hair in different ways in preparation for her caricature. She said that she was going to hang the caricature over her fireplace. Small detail: she just needed to get a fireplace. That’s an example of some of the fun I had!

I’ve also discovered that it’s really nice to have extra chairs lined up for the people waiting in line. You don’t have to have many, just a few extra. It makes things more cozy and relaxing for them.

At the hospital, drawing in the Garden Cafe, the person who was being drawn, got to sit in these ultra comfortable lounging chairs. Another bonus!

I think this was my 4th or 5th event drawing at the Misericordia and I so enjoy being invited back each time.

My Latest Roller Derby Logo Design

My Latest Roller Derby Logo Design

I've done a few roller derby logos over the last few years and here is my latest!

It's for Sturgeon County Junior Roller Derby Association. I think the skater is pretty cute and fierce!

Why the DO NOT COPY all over it? Well it seems as though some new roller derby clubs have tried to use my art in the past. It's quite frustrating as an artist because this is how I make my living and some people think they can use it without paying for it just because they are able to copy it off the internet. Please respect the effort that I took to do it and respect the fact that SCRDA paid me for it. It is mine and it is theirs. If you'd like me to work on a logo for you, please contact me and I'd love to do something cool for you too!

Trying New Things - Even If It's Just a New Marker!

I went hog wild recently and picked up a couple different markers [Faber-Castell PITT artist pens ]to try out for caricatures. I've drawn caricatures with Sharpies for what seems like forever but when I'm drawing on my tablet and not paper, I noticed that I'm the most comfortable with the pencil or paint brush tool. So I thought I'd try paint brush tipped markers. Here's a little doodle with the thinner, more delicate one. I think it will work well at caricature events where the client wants caricatures drawn on smaller sizes of paper than I normally draw on.  It's good to step out of your comfort zone to see if you can do something a little different. That's easier said than done when you always have ongoing work and are in constant need of getting it done. Time to practice, time to try new things, when do you squeeze that in?

Host Program Instructor Sandwich Boards

I really enjoy the opportunity to create art for The City of Edmonton. I think that bright colours, fun images and a nice layout get people's attention. These little cartoons fit city pools well! And here's a little tidbit, do you notice that each person's speech bubble is the same colour as their bathing suit, or in the case of the little boy on the right: the same colour as his ball. Just a little detail that goes through my head when working on it! Does it make a difference? Make it better? I can't say for sure but at least I try!

doodling while watching t.v.

There are a lot of interesting characters on t.v. that you can draw.  Don't get too hung up on details, just get the basic drift.  Drawing for the love of it.

This could either be Wolowitz from Big Bang Theory OR one of the Beatles!?

Grandmas are...

There is nobody more special than your Grandma and I am lucky enough to have the best one.  She is one of the most caring people I've ever met who never says a bad word about anyone.  Celebrate your Grandmother every day and treat her like the precious person she is, whether that's by stopping in for a cup of tea or picking up the phone to say hello.

Does anyone have any ideas for me?

THIS LITTLE GUY NEEDS SOME SORT OF LIFE!?
I sat down the other night to simply draw. I don't often get to "just draw" because it's usually with the purpose of getting someone's project/job done.
I came upon this little guy. He made me smile. I feel the need to use him in some sort of way. Does anyone have any ideas for me?

Caricatures at The Hanger at Fort Edmonton

It was nice to be asked back again this year to the company party at The Hanger in Fort Edmonton today.  It was also so nice to see some familiar, friendly faces was a bonus!  I'm not sure who had more fun, these folks or me?!

Fun at Leduc #1’s Annual Rib Cook Off

The rain didn’t stop the fun at Leduc #1’s Annual Rib Cook Off. My family stopped in to check it out and my son was in heaven since his favourite meal involves ribs!  Oh, and he said “the chocolate waffles were D-E-E-LISH!”

You can enjoy seeing where Alberta’s first oil derrick is located and take a historical tour of Alberta’s most important industry at the Leduc #1 Energy Discovery Centre.

Started the day by doing maple leaf chalk art leading up to the Muttart doors then enjoyed meeting and drawing nice families inside.  Just another day of being proud to be Canadian.  What a great land we live in, OH YA CANADA!

Caricatures at the outdoor swimming pools

I never tire of doing caricatures and I had a wonderful group of people I got to meet and draw at Millcreek Pool’s opening party.

Come visit me and get a caricature at Oliver Pool’s Annual Opening on Saturday, June 18th, 12 - 4 p.m. Caricatures are free with pool admission.  Remember to arrive  early, there’s always a line of people wanting one.  I will be giving out numbers so you can enjoy the rest of the festivities without waiting in line.
